Suing for Elmiron Users Injured by the Dangerous Drug

Elmiron (oral pentosane polysulfate sodium or PPS) is one of the most popular prescription drugs to treat painful bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis. Janssen, the manufacturer of Elmiron, is now facing lawsuits from Elmiron users who have suffered unexpected side effects while using the drug. Most notably, many Elmiron users are experiencing vision loss or a loss of visual acuity to some degree, a side effect they had not been warned about when deciding to take the drug.

Golomb Legalin Philadelphia has a long history of handling dangerous drug claims and lawsuits against Big Pharma companies like Janssen. We are currently using our extensive legal history and talents to investigate claims from injured Elmiron users. If you or someone you love has suffered vision loss while using Elmiron, then we would like to hear from you, too. The more potential clients we hear from, the stronger each potential claim against Janssen becomes.

Medical Studies Link Elmiron to Vision Loss

Four peer-reviewed medical journals recently linked Elmiron to vision loss in its users. Specifically, articles in Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, the British Journal of Ophthalmology, and Review of Ophthalmology have all linked long-term Elmiron use with maculopathy, a degeneration of the retina.

Maculopathy can be permanent, and it usually causes:

  • Blindness in the center of the patient’s field of vision
  • Blurriness
  • Spots
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Inability to read without discomfort
  • Chronic eye pain, as if the eye is strained

Researchers noted that Elmiron users were exhibiting signs of maculopathy unique to “chronic PPS exposure.” Although many Elmiron users are in their elderly years, it was determined that the worsening vision loss was not caused by their age.

Why is Janssen Liable for Elmiron Injuries?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Elmiron to treat painful bladder syndrome. Does that mean that Janssen is excused from liability? Not necessarily.

On the Elmiron package and the informational insert provided with the drug, there is no mention that continued exposure to PPS could cause vision loss or maculopathy. This oversight – either intentional or inadvertent – violates a patient’s right to full disclosure. The medical industry requires a patient to be told of all risks that treatments bring so they can make an informed decision. Without being told all possible side effects, a truly informed decision cannot be made.
