In a recent development, the German drug company, Boehringer Ingelheim, has agreed to pay $650 million to settle the thousands of lawsuits against it for the blood thinner, Pradaxa.
Pradaxa functions as a blood thinner, but the lawsuits claim that its power could be overwhelming at times, sometimes causing fatal bleeding. Emergency workers even claimed that the bleeding didn’t respond to typical treatments for life-threatening bleeding.
The $650 million settlement is likely to resolve the majority of the 4,000 cases filed by patients and families claiming that Boehringer didn’t provide strong enough warnings about Pradaxa’s effects.
Pradaxa is prescribed as a means to prevent blood clots and Boehringer Ingelheim still claims that the drug has proven effective since it was approved in 2010. The drug was created as a means to replace a different blood thinner that required patients to have frequent drug tests and maintain a very strict diet.
While the settlement is being paid out, Pradaxa still remains on the market and an antidote for excessive bleeding cases is being developed.
