Medical Device Recalls Nearly Double in 10-Year Span

Recalls of defective medical devices nearly doubled in the decade between 2003 and 2012, punctuated by a record number of medical device recalls in 2012, according to a new report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The accomplished consumer class action attorneys at Golomb Legal, P.C. are dedicated helping victims of faulty products pursue the financial security they need to move forward with their lives. In advance of the full FDA report, which was expected to be released March 21, an article in The Wall Street Journal stated the number of medical device recalls skyrocketed from 604 in 2003 to 1,190 in 2012. The FDA analysis was conducted in response to a 2011 report from the Government Accountability Office, which expressed concern that recalls of medical devices often came too late to adequately address defects, as thousands of devices had been implanted in patients before recalls were issued.

So-called Class I recalls also increased between 2003 and 2012. Class I recalls are issued when the medication or medical device in question carries a reasonable probability of death. In 2012, there were 57 Class I recalls, a jump of 50 from the seven Class I recalls in 2003.
